December Reflections: Finding Our Way Through the Holiday Season

Hey everyone! I've been sitting here in my office, watching the snow fall outside my window, and it got me thinking about how we're all navigating this hectic December season. Between my counseling sessions, end-of-semester grading, and trying to keep up with holiday preparations, I've noticed a common thread in conversations with students and clients alike – we're all feeling the weight of these shorter days and longer to-do lists.

Let's Talk About Reality: You know what? It's okay to admit that December is tough. Just yesterday, one of my graduate students came in looking exhausted, trying to balance finals with family obligations. We had an honest conversation about how the "most wonderful time of the year" often comes with the most wonderful dose of stress. As a counselor and educator, I see this struggle playing out in so many ways – and I'm right there with you all.

Finding Our Way: This morning, I took a few minutes before my first session to just sit with my coffee and watch the birds at my feeder. It reminded me of something I often tell my clients – nature has a way of showing us what we need. Those birds weren't worried about perfect holiday decorations or unfinished shopping lists. They were just... being. Sometimes we need that reminder to slow down and just be.

Real Talk About Holiday Pressure: Between social media and societal expectations, we're bombarded with images of what the "perfect" holiday season should look like. But here's what I've learned both personally and professionally: the most meaningful moments often happen when we let go of "should" and embrace what is. Maybe that means scaling back on commitments, maybe it means creating new traditions that actually work for you. Whatever it looks like, it's valid.

Moving Forward Together: As I wrap up this wild year of 2024 (and wow, what a year it's been!), I'm reminded of the resilience I've witnessed in my students, clients, and colleagues. We've navigated some tough waters together, and here we are, still standing, still growing. That's something worth celebrating, don't you think?

Here's my challenge to you this month (and yes, I'm working on this too): Find one small way each day to be genuine to yourself. Maybe it's saying no to that holiday party that feels overwhelming. Maybe it's spending ten minutes journaling instead of scrolling through social media. Or maybe it's just allowing yourself to feel whatever you're feeling without judgment.

Remember, my door (virtual or physical) is always open. Whether you're a student struggling with end-of-semester stress, a professional trying to find balance, or someone just needing a listening ear, you're not alone in this journey.

Take care of yourselves,

Dr. Ausloos
